United Nations raises awareness of malaria in Africa
The United Nations “Nothing But Nets” campaign were at Toronto’s Yonge-Dundas to raise awareness of the serious issue of malaria in Africa. The campaign urges people to donate $30 so the organization can send nets to refugees living in camps.
300 Cases of TB Diagnosed in Cunene Province
About 306 new cases of tuberculosis were detected in the southern Cunene Province, by the local health authorities, in the first quarter of the current year. According to the head of Cunene’s public health department, João Perdo, in comparison to the previous three months there was an increase of 101 cases.
Canada to fund “point of care” diagnostics
We recently received word from the Development Innovation Fund has just launched their “Grand Challenges Canada” initiative. The Canadian government will provide the Development Innovation Fund with $225 million over the next 5 years that will go towards the “grand challenge” of “point of care” diagnostics. This funding will be for international work, primarily in middle and low income countries. So for people doing research in point of care diagnostics around TB anywhere, this could be a helpful fund. Our good friends at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation are key partners/administrators in this first challenge of point-of-care diagnostics.
