Vivian Cox MD, a HIV-TB doctor in South Africa, talks about the looming emergency of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) — especially drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB). Someone dies from TB every 18 seconds, Cox says, and that rate will not slow without attention to drug-resistant TB and antimicrobial resistance. Central to patient care is accessibility to newer, safer, and more tolerable drugs.
A trifecta of civil society, public and private funding, and clinicians working together is needed to ensure that there is sustained political will to fund and fight TB, Cox argues. Funding is needed for research into new drugs, new regimens, and better models of care for patients.
