ACTION collaborated with Save the Children on its new report, Immunisation for all: No child left behind, as part of our continuing work to reduce global and national immunization inequities. You can also read its preceding report, Finding the Final Fifth: Inequalities in Immunization, which was released in May.
At the GAVI Alliance Partners’ Forum, more than 600 global health leaders gathered in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania from December 5-7 to discuss accelerating results, innovation, sustainability, and equity (RISE) in global immunization. The GAVI Alliance is a public-private partnership that works to increase access to immunization in developing nations.
ACTION played a key role in driving civil society activities at the Forum, which culminated in a Civil Society Call to Action presented to the Forum at its closing session.
The vibrant role played by civil society organizations (CSOs) in the Forum reflects their vital contributions to delivering vaccinations and care, reaching unimmunized children, and mobilizing resources for health and immunizations.
ACTION hosted a two-day advocacy training in advance of the GAVI Partners' Forum, bringing together civil society leaders from Francophone and Anglophone Africa to share best practices and learn new advocacy skills.
Participants learned the building blocks of an advocacy strategy, how to speak powerfully and work with the media, and tips for advocacy in political contexts.
Advocacy for Immunization
In addition, Aaron Oxley, Director of ACTION partner RESULTS UK, moderated a panel called “RISING Up! Advocacy for Immunisation” which brought together advocates from all over the world to share best practices on advocacy for immunization. ACTION partner Patrick Bertrand, from Global Health Advocates France, spoke on the panel.
Civil society has now rallied around a new Immunization Advocacy Goals framework, which presents a menu of advocacy options to improve access to vaccines around the world.
The framework’s five goals unite civil society – from implementers in Afghanistan, to research and development advocates in Australia – under shared goals that provide an intellectual underpinning for local, regional, and global advocacy on immunizations
ACTION partners played a central role in developing the framework, serving on a working group within the GAVI CSO Constituency that held open consultations with over 200 civil society organizations.
Civil Society Call to ACTION
Civil society activities at the GAVI forum culminated in a Civil Society Call to Action, urging the GAVI Alliance to support increased participation from civil society in its funding, strategy, and governance.
The Call to Action urges GAVI to articulate in its next business plan how civil society contributes to each of GAVI’s strategic objectives, and to create a second seat on the GAVI Alliance Board for a civil society representative, among other calls for more equitable representation.
ACTION is committed to working across the GAVI Alliance in their efforts to do the hard work necessary to create a second board seat and to enable more contributions by civil society actors.
